MDCC announces new special assistant to the president

Dr. Ben Cloyd to join the Trojan family July 1, 2020

Mississippi Delta Community College President Dr. Tyrone Jackson announces the appointment of Dr. Ben Cloyd to the position of special assistant to the president effective July 1, 2020. Cloyd comes to MDCC from Hinds Community College where he currently serves as academic dean, district director for accreditation, and institutional accreditation liaison for The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

"Joining the team at Mississippi Delta Cben-cloydommunity College is an opportunity that I am thrilled about,” stated Cloyd. “Dr. Jackson has a vision for the future that is exciting, and there is nothing better than working with great educators to enhance the collegiate experience on behalf of our students. I look forward to building relationships throughout the college and community in the years to come.”

Dr. Cloyd’s educational experience includes a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Notre Dame and graduate studies from Louisiana State University where he earned both Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.

He is the author of Haunted by Atrocity: Civil War Prisons in American Memory. Dr. Cloyd started working at Hinds Community College in 2004, where he taught history. In 2012, he became honors program director, and in 2016, Dr. Cloyd became academic dean for the Raymond Campus & Nursing Allied Health Center. In addition to serving as academic dean, Cloyd’s duties expanded in 2019 to include district director for accreditation and institutional accreditation liaison.

Dr. Cloyd and his wife, Katie, have been married for 13 years. They have three daughters Riley (10), Sofia (9), and Kelly (6). They also have a foster child named Kingston (3). Dr. Cloyd said, “Our next big project is expanding our family with our first kittens.”

“Dr. Cloyd is very knowledgeable and experienced with a discernible commitment to higher education,” stated President Jackson. “He will be an excellent addition to our senior leadership team as a member of President’s Cabinet and we welcome him to the Trojan Family.”
