MOORHEAD, Miss. (Nov. 18 2021) – Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) hosted Harvest Day on November 17 at the Greenville Higher Education Center (GHEC) to provide meals to MDCC students.

MDCC GHEC Student Services Coordinator Alexis Allen, who chaired the event alongside Instructional Advisor Pamela Venton and Administrative Assistant Rosalyn Tucker, explained that the event was only possible due to donations from MARS and the GHEC faculty and staff.

“We want to remind our students that our care for them is beyond their educational pursuit and that we are here for them during the upcoming holidays,” said Allen. “Thanks to MARS through Kyla Washington, MARS Community Engagement Office, we were able to meet our goals by collecting 12 turkeys and 12 hams. That means 12 students will receive a full course Thanksgiving meal.”

“The GHEC faculty and staff contributed all the fixings to compose a meal such as stuffing mix, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy mix and frozen fruit pies,” continued Allen.

Along with the hams and turkeys, MARS donated a bag of rice to each student enrolled at the GHEC. Walmart and an anonymous community member also contributed items for the Thanksgiving meals.

At the event, MDCC President Dr. Tyrone Jackson explained that research shows that just as much learning takes place outside of the classroom as it does inside the classroom.

“This is an opportunity for us to support our students outside the classroom,” said Jackson. “We support our students in all endeavors but particularly during the Thanksgiving season; we see it as an opportunity to give back.”

Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons was also in attendance.

“When you think about innovation, education, economic development, workforce development and community development, you think about Mississippi Delta Community College,” said Simmons. “Today, Mississippi Delta Community College is everything to the students that they serve. For MARS Food and this great community college to care so much about their students just means a whole lot.”
