Honors Day Program

MOORHEAD, Miss. (Apr. 29, 2024) – Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) recognized its scholars on April 24 during its annual Honors Day Ceremony. MDCC Vice President of Instruction Teresa Webster welcomed those in attendance and informed them that the event was a special day set aside to honor students for their academic excellence.

Webster welcomed everyone to the ceremony before MDCC Police Officers Bobby Fuller and Willie Steele posted the colors.

Dean of Student Services Chris Lee then led the attendees in an invocation, pledge of allegiance, and recognition of special guests, including veterans, law enforcement, and first responders.

An introduction was then offered by Webster, who explained that two categories of awards would be given out throughout the ceremony. Achievement awards are given for excellence in a particular discipline, whereas departmental awards are the highest honor bestowed upon a student by a specific department.

MDCC President Dr. Tyrone Jackson then took to the podium to issue words of encouragement to the honorees. He began his speech by saying, “Anytime we have an opportunity to celebrate student success, it’s a great day. Moreover, a high level of student success is what we’re all about here at Mississippi Delta Community College.”

Before awards were presented, Director of Choral Activities Harvey Jackson led the MDCC Chamber Choir in a rendition of “Soon I Will Be Done.”

Marion Cork, Gabbryielle Jackson, Kate Lloyd and Micah Reed were recognized as members of the 2024 MDCC Hall of Fame. In order to be eligible for this honor, the students must be sophomores with a scholastic average of 3.5 or better while being in school for at least three consecutive semesters. In addition, they must also have rendered service and contributions to the college and possess qualities of leadership, loyalty, character, overall excellent college citizenship, and potential community leadership.

Following the Hall of Fame announcement, the department chairs and organization sponsors presented students with achievement and departmental awards for their accomplishments throughout the academic year.

Jackson concluded the ceremony by recognizing faculty and staff who had received honors and awards throughout the past school year, as well as honoring retirees Bobby Fuller, Dr. Joel Gibson, Amanda Hardin, Linda Hiter, Marla Pearce, Paula Rounsaville, James Shannon, and Vicki Tabb
