MOORHEAD, Miss. (June 16, 2022) – Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) has a variety of ways for students to push themselves academically beyond the classroom. One program that provides such an opportunity is the MDCC Honors College.

“The Honors College provides students who excel academically an educational experience beyond the standard curriculum in an environment that promotes discovery and creativity,” said Philip Lawes, a math instructor and the faculty advisor for the Honors College.

One of the most prominent Honors College events is its Speaker Series. Several times a year, the Honors College will host a guest speaker who will present on a variety of topics.

Past events have included MDCC Music Instructor and song writer James Shannon giving a class on the history of the steel guitar, Dr. John Lucas, III of Greenwood Leflore Hospital presenting on healthy diets, and Neurosurgeon Dr. Jimmy Miller sharing his experience with The Neuroscience of Vision.

Becoming a member of the MDCC Honors College takes commitment and determination.

“To qualify for the Honors College students must meet a minimum ACT requirement. To complete the Honors College, students must maintain a 3.5 grade point average with no grade below a B, while taking required academically challenging courses,” Lawes explained.
