MOORHEAD, Miss. (Mar. 8, 2023) – On March 6, the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Beta Rho Omicron Chapter of Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) inducted new members for the 2023 spring semester.
“This was more than our regular celebration,” said Vice President of Effectiveness and Enrollment Dr. Ben Cloyd. “This induction is always special but this was our biggest group in a while and 15 of the inductees were middle college students.”
Middle college is a dual credit/dual enrollment program in which high school juniors or seniors attend a portion of the day at their high school and a portion at a postsecondary institution. Districts provide a transitional counselor and closely monitor student progress.
“We had students from Riverside and O’Bannon High School inducted. Those students are on track to graduate and receive their high school diploma and associate’s degree at the same time,” continued Cloyd.
The ceremony took place on the second floor of the Greenville Higher Education Center (GHEC) on the MDCC Greenville campus. An invocation was given by student Christopher Tonos followed by a welcome from Chapter President Ja’Khyra Ford.
Vice President of Leadership Kamya Smart then introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Temika Simmons. Simmons is chief public affairs officer for the Delta Health Alliance and wife of Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons.
Following Simmons, PTK Advisor Pamela Venton inducted the newest members into PTK.
“Our students’ academic excellence is an example of them growing as leaders,” said Venton. “We provide opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills to produce better servant leaders.”
