MOORHEAD, Miss. (Dec. 1, 2022) – Members of the Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) Student Government Association (SGA) took a trip to Washington, D.C. earlier this semester to attend the American Student Government Association's National Student Government Summit.

The sessions at the conference helped students with topics such as mental health on college campuses, building a better student government, and conflict resolution. It also gave the students the opportunity to network with students and advisors from other colleges.

"The conference was centered around developing our student leaders," explained SGA Advisor and Associate Dean of Student Services Nakeshia Fipps. "This will in turn improve our SGA, which will contribute to the growth of the college and provide an improved experience for all students."

The conference was attended by the MDCC SGA officers as well as Mister and Miss MDCC. However, those students split up, attended different sessions and took notes to bring back and distribute to their fellow SGA members.

"I was able to network and meet people from all over," said SGA Parliamentarian Jasmine Williamson. "The conference gave our executive board a lot to bring back to make the MDCC campus a better place."

SGA Vice President Jakori Johnson explained that he believes the trip gave the SGA executive board a chance to grow both professionally and interpersonally.

"This trip was a learning experience that provided us with the essential skills of networking and meeting leaders from all over the country. Outside of just our conference, we spent time together learning about each other's personal lives and how they balanced their schedules," said Johnson.

"I believe the students got an influx of ideas and a sense of their leadership potential. Networking with other community colleges and small universities granted them an understanding of the possibilities for development," said Fipps.
